Kapa Haka Festival

On Wednesday it was our Kapa Haka festival performance! I was so excited because pretty much everyday we had practiced over and over! Kapa Haka was one of my favourite things to do as I put heaps of effort into it.

The performance was at the Gisborne showgrounds. Me and Alice sat together on the bus ride. When we arrived I was so nervous! As we had our very last practice, I told myself "Let's do this!!" Then we started walking into the hall, I was so happy!

As the the man addressed the crowd we marched up onto the stage. I could hear the cheering ringing in my ears as we got into places. Our first song was E Tea Riki and it went so quickly!! Very soon after, the boys finished the haka and our performance was almost over!

As fast as it started we were off the stage and waiting for Wai and Nui to finish. I felt so proud of myself!

Then after Wai and Nui had performed, the whole school sang Tu Mai Ra together. After that I had so much fun, I just couldn't wait for next year!!

Gordon Walters art

The dream team was teaching us ( Koka Rachel and Koka Jo,as they like to call themselves) on Wednesday. Even though we had other priorities to complete, The dream team organised some digital art based on the art that New Zealand artist Gordon Walters makes. I thought that it was going to be very difficult as this was what his art look liked:
Really cool! But this wasn't that hard to do, you just copy rectangles and circles and place them. Here is my art:
I loved doing this and I hope we do something like this again soon!

3D Hand Art

This week was when the Year 6's went on camp so we had super fun priorities. One of our priorities was 3D hand art. We had to trace our hand and then draw lines that go straight and then curved on the hand.

I have finished my lines and now I am on to colouring but I haven't finished. It looks so cool! Here is a picture:

I loved doing this and I hope we do more art again soon!

The Monarch Show

This week was the first week of the term and it has already been busy! For three days in a row we had athletics practice and I wasn't very good at it. Also every morning straight after the bell, we have Kapa Haka practice.
My favorite thing this week was when the whole school walked to Wainui Surf Club to see a show about Monarch butterflies. I love walking and that was how I was brought up, so walking there was super fun!

Anyway the play was about a girl who went to stay at her grandmas to write her speech about Monarchs. Her grandma was a monarch butterfly scientist and she got into a fight with a counselor about the butterflies home being crushed to build a highway. The girl had to say her speech in front of heaps of people at a jury to win back the butterfly home and they won!!

I loved going to this show and I hope we do something like this again soon!

My Butter Maker

This week our priorities were all farm based because of our trip to Pihitia Station. Some of my favourite tasks were when we made a logo for Pihitia Station, designing a farm and making a machine that will help around the farm. I made a butter maker that shakes up the milk to make butter. Here is my machine I invented and logo:

Pihitia Station

On Tuesday, Moana Syndicate had a trip to Pihitia Station. At the farm there were 6 places to go: types of dairy and how they are made, drones and gadgets, shearing the sheep, meat and how it is made, sheep dogs and the machines they use on the farm.

My favourite place to go I think was they dairy because so many yummy products are made from cows, goats, sheep and deer too!  Also, it was so much fun to make butter with a fresh jar of milk. My least favourite was the meat because, I like meat but it is just horrible how it is made so I didn't watch.

An interesting thing was the drone because Norm ( the farmer) could use it to see if the water troughs were full or not and it would save him so much time walking down to each one, then if they weren't full he could go and fill them.

I loved going to the farm and I would like to do something like that again.

Ice cream sundae

Last week, in our writing workshop we wrote instructions of how to make an ice cream sundae. Then on Tuesday, we all went into the staffroom to make our treat! We swapped instructions with people, ( I swapped with Ella ) and followed our instructions exactly.

My instructions went really well as Ella loved her ice cream sundae! The ingredients we were meant to have were: vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce, hundreds and thousands and a pink wafer, which we didn't have so instead we used some marshmallows.

I think Ella's instructions were amazing but we both could have added how many scoops of ice cream. Over all I absolutely loved this and I hope we do something  like this again sometime soon.

LTP Week 7

This week for Learning Through Play, since it was hot and sunny, we went down to the beach with the whole Moana Syndicate. Me, Alice and Ella usually play horses at lunch and morning tea so when we found out we were going to the beach we were super happy because we could play that at the beach!

My favourite bit when we went to the beach was jumping off the dunes and sprinting down the beach, turning around and restarting. After playing for a bit we saw that Josie was plaiting Indie's hair. After Josie had finished the braid, she started sticking in pretty little flowers. It looked amazing!! Everybody wanted to have their hair done but since me, Ella and  Alice had asked before it started to look like Christmas shopping, we got our hair done super fast!

Josie's hair salon was really popular, even some of the teachers wanted to get their hair done! We think that the flowers are called Freesia here is what they look like:

I loved going to the beach and I hope that we go there again soon!

Automata

On Wednesday me, Alice and Josie made an automata. If you are thinking what are you talking about? An automata is moving toy that has a cam, a frame, a cam follower and a handle.

Last week was when we did the planning but I wasn't here last week so I joined Alice and Josie's group. Our initial plan was to do a moving dolphin but instead we did Earth. This wasn't as difficult as we thought it would be.

First we made the frame. To make the frame you need a box with no sides, some cardboard and tape. First we taped the cardboard to the edges and then made the cam and glued it to the skewer. After assembling the automata we started decorating.

We printed out the earth and stuck it to the top skewer. Then we cut off the edges of blue paper and stuck it on. Then we painted the automata black like the night sky and let it dry. I really liked automata even though it was tricky, would you like to play with our toy?

LTP Junky Monkey

This week for Learning Through Play, me, Ella, Alice and Indie went to Junky Monkey. Junky Monkey is a place where you deconstruct and then reconstruct
to make something new. The last time I went to Junky Monkey, I was doing more of the deconstructing than the reconstructing, so this time I thought that I would focus more on creating things.

First we looked in the box with all of the toys and decided on some pieces for us to use.
Based on the toys we had chosen, we decided to make a playground/obstacle course. We chose a table to work at and spread out our building materials. We had
lots of great ideas but decided on the best one.

Once we completely decided on an idea, we started building! First we made a spinny thing that you sit on and it spins. We used a bolt, nuts, washers and piled them up until it was at the right height. Then we made a trampoline using a plastic cup,
a net and a hair tie. Then I had the idea of making a slide going into a pool, so we
leaned a plastic track on the trampoline and made a pool using the hole in the table.

After that we pretty much just assembled our playground and Koka Ngaire filmed
a little person playing on the playground. Would you like to play on it?

Household Chores

This week for our quickwrite, we had to write four answers to four questions. The questions were: Should children help with household chores, What household chores would you enjoy doing, and why, What household chores would be your least favourite, and why, and the last question is, If you could choose between homework and household chores, what would you choose, and why?

This is my first paragraph.
Should children help with household chores?
Yes I think everybody should help with chores including children. Kids should do chores because, chores may seem boring but they actually make kids happy and feel good about themselves. Also kids should help around the house because, chores teach kids two really good things: responsibility and time management. Chores include: Ironing, vacuuming, mopping, dusting and making your bed.

Do you think children should help with chores?  Comment what you think.

Learning Through Play

This week we started LTP ( Learning Through Play) in the Moana syndicate.  LTP is when you learn new things and skills while playing.  There are four options for LTP: Junky monkey,
Makey makey, Cardboard nation and Planet construction.
But I only did Makey makey this week so I don't know what you
do in the other activities.

Makey makey- Are cool little packed boxes with a motherboard, alligator clips, which are clips that join onto the motherboard, spare wires for connecting things, instructions and stickers, which we didn't use. I went to Makey makey with my friend and we made a piano and bongo drums with pillows, so when we touched the pillows they made a sound like a piano or bongos.
I really enjoyed Makey makey, but next time I would like to go somewhere different.

Matariki

This week is the last week of the term, and has been pretty crazy!
We even had to do a Just Dance performance for
one of our priorities! One of my favorite tasks
was the Matariki jigsaw puzzle.

The jigsaw pieces asked questions
about Matariki and we had to answer them. The
teacher put fact cards around the class that we had to
find to be able to answer the questions.

After we had written all of the facts down, we had to
color in the jigsaw pieces and cut them out.
Once we had cut them all out we got a piece of A3
colored paper,  put the jigsaw together and
glued it onto the paper.

This task was really tricky because we had to
glue the pieces together without making them overlap!
How do you celebrate Matariki?

Delicious Menu

This week we had so many AWESOME priorities such as:
we wrote letters to the Board of Trustees about why
we wanted to have a shorter term, another letter to our
principle as our teacher is leaving in term 3 and we
need a new one who is suitable.  But my
favorite was making a yummy menu and
a yucky menu. Here they are. What dish would
you try?

Just Dance

   Just Dance
After lockdown, me and my friends volunteered to
run Just Dance. If you are wondering what Just
Dance is, it is an active video game when you have to
copy the person on the screen like a reflection in a
mirror.
Me, Ella, Rio and Josie were in charge of the projector so we
had to learn how to work it. It was really confusing!! Two of our
favourite dances are “Timber”-2 player and “Waka Waka”-4
player.  The only one I know off by heart is
“Kung Fu Fighting”.But I don’t really like it.

Fridays is when anybody can come to do Just Dance.
Lot’s of juniors join in and it is really funny, cute and cool
to see them trying to follow the moves!

After Discovery on Friday me and my friends got to hand
out shine cards to the people that came and parcicartated
at Just Dance.  Shine cards are cards that the teachers hand
out to children that are showing our school values: Respect,
Responsibility and Resilience.

MLH Learning From Home

On 25 of March Wednesday 2020 to the 18 of May on Monday we were told firmly that we had to Stay home and Save lives.  We
couldn’t go out of the house so that meant no school and so we
had to do learning from home for five weeks.

We had subjects to do every week, these were the subjects: the
first week we didn’t have a subject, the second week it was
close to Anzac day so our week was Anzac themed, then our next
week was Animal Kingdom so we learnt lots about animals, After
that was World Famous and  our last one was Storytime themed.

My favourite theme was world famous because I got to do the person who was keeping us safe throughout the lockdown… Jacinda Ardern!!
Yay!  We had to do a Flipgrid ( a video ) of us dressed up as our famous person, I sort of  looked like Jacinda!

Every Friday was fancy Friday so we had to dress up in whatever
that weeks theme was on our Google meets which are meeting’s
but they are Socially distanced.

I was scared at first but the learning was so much fun and I was so happy to get back to school and see all my friends and teachers!!

Now we are all back at school with all my friends!!
